What is the difference
between Rookie, Divisional, and All-Net?
|
Rookie League stressing fundamental play is available for 1st and 2nd graders. Two levels are offered within the Rookie division, Beginning and Advanced. Rookie I (Beginning) features six weeks of instructional play with no weekly practices. Toward the 4th-5th week teams will begin controlled scrimmages. Rookie II (Advanced) offers returning 2nd graders and more athletic first graders the opportunity to expand by incorporating more advanced drills and scrimmaging opportunities over an 8 week period. Read more about it on the Rookie League webpage.
Divisional play is our regular league offering competitive play for boys and girls in the 3rd through 8th grades. Play is conducted in gymnasiums with referees and a scoreboard. Teams usually practice 1-2 times per week at any of our local communities outdoor facilities.
The All-Net Program is a division of NJB created to provide a more competitive and organized level of youth basketball, designed to prepare boys and girls in the 5th through 8th grade for high school level competition. Teams primarily consist of All-Star caliber players and travel to play against teams from other Southern California NJB Chapters. Players attend try-outs and must be selected to join a team. Read more about it on the All-Net webpage. |
In what division does my child play?
Divisional & Rookie Players may play up 1 grade level with approval of the Board of Directors. Playing up two grade levels is not permitted under any circumstances.
All-Net No known restrictions on playing up. |
Do I have to live in
Chino Valley (Chino or Chino
Hills)?
|
Divisional & Rookie No. Players are allowed to register and play for the NJB Chapter of their choice.
All-Net Players must reside within the boundaries of the chapter that their team represents. For Chino Valley the player must reside in either Chino or Chino Hills. Boys teams may have 2 "Out of Boundary" players, while girls teams may have 3. "Out of Boundary" players must receive a "release" from the chapter within which they reside to play for Chino Valley. |
When and where will my child practice?
|
Practices are dependent upon the individual coaches but are usually once or twice a week at any of the local outdoor courts.
What about games? Games are traditionally on Sundays but may be on a Saturday if gym availability dictates. Games are played at any of our local gymnasium facilities (See the MAPS webpage). All-Net teams travel throughout the Orange County and Inland Empire areas. |
|
NJB games throughout Southern California are typically contested on Sundays. This is primarily due to gym availability. Gym space is requested through the local School Districts who in turn get approval from the local schools who traditionally limit usage to Sunday to avoid conflict with their own teams/clubs.
Can games be scheduled around my church commitments? A very common question but unfortunately one which cannot be honored. The sheer volume of CVNJB players would make this an imposing task to tackle. One goal of our schedules is to have teams play at random times throughout the day so that no team has all morning games or all afternoon games.
Along this line, we do attempt to schedule games around a Head Coach's personal commitments. If he/she were a church official we would do our best to schedule all afternoon games. If a Head Coach has afternoon responsibilities we schedule all his games in the morning. |
Do we need any special equipment?
|
A good pair of basketball or tennis shoes is required. They will wear fast as most of our teams practice on outdoor courts.
What size basketball? Most coaches require players to bring their own ball to practice. Different divisions use different size basketballs. - Div 1 Boys use a standard (High School, College, Professional) size (29.5) ball. - Div 1 & 2 Girls and Div 2 Boys use an intermediate (Womens) size (28.5) ball. - Div 3 & Rookie Leagues use a youth size (27.5) ball. - All-Net Girls (all grades) & All-Net Boys 5th Grade use an intermediate size (28.5) ball. - All-Net Boys (grades 6-8) use a standard size (29.5) ball.. |
|
Divisional teams may start practicing
immediately upon conclusion of the draft. Our season consists of 10 regular
season/playoff games. All games are played
between
All-Net teams play 14 games and are scheduled by National Headquarters. How long does it last? The last games will be scheduled for mid February. Note that participation in Championship Series and/or All-Stars could significantly extend your season.
See our Calendar for basic dates. |
How much of the game will my child play?
|
NJB incorporates strict participation rules for Divisional Players. Each child is required to play one full and continuous period in each half. A 5th period is played at which time the coach may freely substitute and participation rules do not apply.
Note that some coaches base their 5th period playing time on practice attendance. A player that repeatedly fails to show up to practice makes it harder for coaches to teach new things and advance the team's level of play.
Also note that teams are "penalized" when a player fails to attend a game. NJB rules attempt to maintain team equality for various situations. A team missing multiple players is almost always at a disadvantage, especially for teams having less than 10 players on their complete roster.
All-Net imposes no player participation rules. |
Can my child play with his/her friends?
|
The simple answer is no.
|
|
CVNJB imposes no fundraiser on its families. The anticipated revenue from a fundraiser have been folded into the basic registration fees. This approach provides our league a more predictable operating budget while also alleviating the manpower burden of running the fundraiser. Additionally each family knows their financial responsibility upon registration, there are no hidden costs. |
What do I receive for my registration fee?
|
Divisional registration entitles you to: - 10 games played in local gymnasiums with referees and scoreboards. - An official NJB Uniform (shorts and jersey) - Picture Package - Participation Award
Why is it so expensive? The majority of expenses reside in the following areas: gym rental, uniforms, photos, awards, referees, score/time keepers and NJB license fees. These items comprise approximately 85% of our registration fee. There are many other incidental expenses required to operate a league of this size. As a point of reference it costs well over $100 per hour to conduct our games. |
Where can I get additional information about NJB?
|
For Chino Valley NJB information we suggest that you "surf" our website. The Team Info page has many details regarding our league. If you require additional assistance feel free to e-mail any Board Member. You may also attend one of our Board Meetings whose schedule will be posted.
For NJB Headquarters information please see their website at www.njbl.org. |
|
Divisional/Rookie registration can be completed through the mail, on the internet, or in person.
Registration reminders are mailed out in early August to all returning players. The forms can then be mailed or hand delivered to the Chino Hills Postal Place. At least one walk-up registration day will be scheduled, usually at Chino Hills Community Park. On-line registration is available for those wishing to use a credit card.
Registrations are accepted on a first-come first-served basis until the league is full.
Volunteers willing to Head Coach or serve as a committee member will be given priority.
See our Registration page for more information.
All-Net registration is handled through NJB Headquarters. Note that none of the All-Net registration fees are returned to the local chapter. As a result, each All-Net team must pay a fee to Chino Valley NJB to help offset costs for photos, awards, and most significantly, gym time. |
How is it possible to fill
up a league?
|
We are limited by gymnasium
time. Chino Hills has no community
gymnasiums. Our only local source are
the schools which limit availability to Sundays. We schedule as many games as feasible between
the hours of |
|
If you went on-line or submitted a form through the
mail, at the For All-Net you can check your team roster at the NJB Headquarters website. |
|
All Rookie League and Division players must attend a player evaluation where each player will be run through a series of drills. Players are scored for each drill resulting in an overall rating which will be used during the draft process. In addition, uniform sizing will also be conducted at the player evaluation. This is a mandatory activity to insure each player receives a properly fit jersey. Failure to attend an evaluation will jeopardize participation in the league. Player evaluation dates/times will be posted on our website's homepage. |
|
Player evaluations are essential to our goal of creating equally talented teams. Uniform sizing and other administrative functions are also conducted at this time.
Do I have to attend? YES, all players are REQUIRED to participate, even if you are on the waiting list.
What if I can’t? Failure to attend an evaluation will jeopardize participation in the league. Players on the waiting list who attend the evaluation will be given priority over those who register early but do not complete the evaluation.
Contact the Player Agent if you have any issues/questions. |
|
Chino Valley NJB has successfully used the following draft system to create teams: 1) Each coach randomly receives a team number which represents their selection order. 2) For a 10 team draft the top 15 players based on evaluation score are placed on the board. 3) Team #1 picks first, Team #2 picks second, etc, thru Team #10. 4) The draft board is then replenished with the next 10 players based on evaluation scores. 5) Selection resumes with Team #10 selecting, then Team #9, etc, through Team #1. 6) The board is replenished and the selection process continues in the serpentine fashion. 7) Teams with less than 10 players will be assigned new players, in the draft order, as registration permits. |
As a rule, post draft trades are not allowed but will be evaluated under extreme circumstances.
When will I be contacted by a coach?
|
Coaches will begin contacting players after the player draft in late October. PLEASE give coaches time to contact you. Though some teams MAY begin practicing right away, many will not. Your particular coach may be on vacation or have overlapping commitments. Rest assured you will be contacted.
If you have not been contacted by the 2nd week in November then contact a Player Agent. |
|
YES!! Chino Valley NJB is an ALL VOLUNTEER organization. There are many opportunities to get involved and help our league. Each team needs a Head Coach, most have at least one Assistant Coach. A Team Manager or Team Parent is essential. Lastly, we are always in need of help during registration, on evaluation days, and on picture day.
If you have any questions regarding volunteering please email a Board Member. |
|
Volunteer coaches are one of our most precious resources. PLEASE volunteer if you are interested. You are not required to have a child participating in the league. NJB offers clinics and instructional materials for those having no prior experience. Can I choose my assistant coach? Yes,
|
|
Yes. In fact, each team is required to acquire a tax deductible sponsorship.
We are a volunteer organization dependent upon community support to successfully operate our program which provides an exceptional environment for more than 700 local children. Funding is entirely dependent upon registration fees and the contributions of local businesses and individuals.
As a sponsor, your contribution will play a MAJOR role in developing and nurturing the youth of our community. While coaches and league representatives are volunteers, the cost of operating a league dependent upon gymnasium rental is substantial. Your generous contribution will help pay for many items including, but not necessarily limited to, gym rental, basketballs, coach screening and education, game related fees, and printed materials.
Team sponsors receives: - NJB Sponsor Appreciation Plaque with your team’s photograph. - Listing of your name on the CVNJB Team Sponsors webpage.
CVNJB also offers Chapter Sponsorships which receive additional benefits. See our Sponsor's Page for additional details. |

The 10 game Chino Valley NJB divisional schedule includes regular season and playoffs. Two teams from each division will qualify for a championship game which is a bonus 11th game. The number of playoff games is dependent upon the number of teams in each division. The goal is to provide enough regular season games so that teams may be sufficiently ranked to conduct a meaningful playoff. The usual format is to conduct 8 regular season games and 2 playoff games.
See the Team Info webpage for detailed information regarding playoff structure.
What is the Extravaganza?
The Chino Valley Extravaganza is an all day event to showcase
our divisional playoff championship games. Festivities typically include a coaches game, player introductions, play-by-play
announcing, post game award presentations, cheerleaders, and
raffles/prizes. In addition, games are usually
digitally recorded and available for purchase
See our Extravaganza webpage for detailed information as the season progresses. |
What is the Championship Series?
|
The Championship Series is a
post-season tournament operated by NJB Headquarters.

6-4. All the 10-0 teams play each other,
etc. Note that there will be travel

Southern Orange County to the
See our Championship Series webpage additional information. |
How are the All-Star teams selected?
|
All-Star players are selected from nominations received from each of the division’s head coaches. All coaches and players must be approved by the Board of Directors. All-Star teams compete against other NJB Chapters in a round robin type format with winners qualifying to play in NJB’s National All-Star Tournament.
See our All-Star webpage additional information. |

Yes. NJB provides several safeguards.
They ask all coaches to have first-aid kits as part of their practice equipment.
NJB requires that an adult female be present at all girls’ team practices, no exceptions.
Every individual (Board Member, Coach, Assistant Coach, etc) associated with NJB is required to register with NJB Headquarters. In addition to address and telephone information there are also a series of Yes/No questions that relate to an individuals fitness and eligibility to be involved in youth sports.
Lastly, all coaches (head and assistant) must be fingerprinted and are subject to background investigation and/or fingerprint verification to determine suitability for this sensitive community position. Live Scan, by U.S. Fingerprinting, provides a timely and accurate response from the Department of Justice alerting NJB to anyone who has had a felony conviction. If a felony conviction appears, that individual, as well as our Chapter Director, is immediately notified that the individual can no longer be associated with any NJB activity: Zero tolerance! |
|
Players requesting a refund prior to uniform distribution will receive 100%. As a general rule, requests received on or after that date are not honored. Medical and/or special circumstances will be evaluated on a case by case basis. |
What about Spring, Summer, or Fall Leagues?
|
As a Chapter, Chino Valley directly participates in the NJB Winter League (November - March). During Winter League we conduct individual registration, create teams, and schedule games in our local gyms.
At the conclusion of our Winter season there are opportunities for teams to continue play. These NJB Leagues are for coaches who wish to continue playing with their existing team or desire to put together their own teams. Chino Valley NJB does NOT conduct registration, assign players, or schedule games. NJB Headquarters performs all registration and scheduling. Games are usually held in Orange County or Inland Empire gyms however sometimes local sites are secured.
Always check National’s NJB website for the latest information regarding the following off-season programs: Spring League: Games played in late April through May. Summer Tournaments: Weekend tournaments played from May through August. Summer League: Games played in June/July. Fall League: Games played in August/September. |
